Photo Exhibit to Celebrate RMMS Diversity, Character
The Martinez Family, from the "Beauty in Diversity" Exhibit

The students and families of Regional Multicultural Magnet School (RMMS) have compelling stories to tell. Through the power of photos and prose, those stories are about to come alive.

“Beauty in Diversity” will be unveiled at the school on Thursday, Oct. 19, at 6:30 p.m. The public is encouraged to attend this powerful collection of images and histories of students representing numerous cultures and origins.

“Our school literally lives and celebrates the diversity around us every day and everyone has a story, no matter their background,” said Kelley Norcia, a 4th/5th grade teacher and professional photographer who owns Kelley Norcia Photography. “There are always common ties that bind us together and the message from the interviews was that love is the strongest tie of all.”

“Beauty in Diversity” features photos and stories of 25 RMMS students and their families. Sue Goldstein, the school’s World language coach, was inspired to create an exhibit that celebrated the diversity of RMMS children. Goldstein collaborated with Norcia, who shot all the photos, and both Goldstein and writer Mary Howard conducted interviews with the families. Howard wrote the stories that accompany the photographs and the RMMS Foundation provided the funding for the project.

The artists and organizers took inspiration from other exhibits and photos that highlight diversity, including immigration photos displayed in downtown New London. RMMS – an interdistrict magnet school drawing elementary age students from throughout the region – represented a cross section of society and cultures.

“Our school is a microcosm of our country,” Norcia said. “There is diversity and among us there is acceptance and similarities that outweigh our differences.”

All are welcome to attend the exhibit, which is free to the public.
