Virtual High School

Since 2003, the RESC Alliance began offering districts the first statewide movement toward online education through a partnership with Virtual High School (VHS.) Over 400 students each semester gain 21st century skills by selecting from over 200 online classes and engaging and working with peers throughout the world.

To meet the demand for highly challenging classes that give students a competitive edge, Virtual High School is now offering Latin, Mandarin Chinese and a variety of popular Advance Placement Courses. Students can explore career paths before entering college or take Advanced Placement courses not offered in their own school. Middle schools can now join VHS to offer their students access to 50 high school level courses online.

Each RESC can provide its districts with flexible membership options, peer support/user group forums for teachers and site coordinators, program coordination and support, and discounted consortium rates.

Virtual Learning Academy
This is a web-based program delivery system that has several key features such as:

  • tracking students’ progress to improve completion rates
  • greater flexibility for special needs students
  • auditory element which reads text to students
  • customized individual curricula provides above, below, and at grade level courses
  • embedded streaming videos within each course to enhance the learning process

Schools are using Virtual Learning Academy to supplement their alternative education programs and to offer options for students under expulsion or homebound for medical reasons. It is also an effective addition to special education programs and to prevention programs for students who are at risk of suspension.
