Connecticut River Academy Announces Windy Petersen as Interim Assistant Principal
Windy Petersen

LEARN and Goodwin University are delighted to announce Windy Petersen as the interim assistant principal at the Connecticut River Academy (CTRA), effective immediately.

Petersen’s experience with LEARN and Goodwin includes the past two years, when she served as Student Services Supervisor for Goodwin Magnet Schools, where she provided oversight of special education at CTRA. She is also an adept special education teacher and a certified non-violent crisis instructor. The LEARN Executive Committee unanimously approved Petersen’s appointment on Friday, July 10. She joins a new leadership team at CTRA with Interim Principal JT Foster, who was recently promoted from assistant principal to interim principal for the 2020-21 school year.

“I look forward to continuing my work with CTRA as interim assistant principal,” Petersen said. “I hope to initiate more student-led leadership and continue the creation of a culturally responsible environment where all scholars can be successful.”

CTRA is an award-winning magnet school located on Goodwin University’s Riverside Campus. The school is dedicated to its theme of sustainability, offering state-of-the-art facilities in advanced manufacturing and environmental sciences. LEARN, the Regional Educational Service Center (RESC) for southeastern Connecticut, administers CTRA in cooperation with Goodwin University. Goodwin owns and has ultimate oversight of their campus inter-district magnet school operations. In 2020, Magnet Schools of America named CTRA a National Magnet School of Excellence.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for both CTRA and the University,” said Goodwin president Mark Scheinberg. “The skills and experience Windy brings to this role not only will strengthen the academic program, but will also ensure that the Academy is shaping and graduating socially responsible scholars in line with its mission.”

In her new role as interim assistant principal, Petersen will be responsible for supporting educators and scholars as CTRA transitions back to in-person learning. She will create a system of interventions for scholars struggling with behavioral expectations and revise the CTRA code of conduct to emphasize restorative options. Interim Principal JT Foster stated, "Windy's background in trauma-informed and restorative practices makes her an exciting addition to our team."

Prior to working for LEARN and Goodwin, Petersen taught special education at school districts throughout Connecticut, including Hartford, Columbia, and Colchester, as well as a district in the state of Washington. She is a University of Saint Joseph graduate, earning a Bachelor’s degree in special education/elementary education. She earned her master’s degree in Remedial Reading and her 6th year degree from Central Connecticut State University.
