Scot Haney and Class

Who better to teach kids about weather than one of Connecticut’s most famous meteorologists and news personalities?

On Friday, Jan. 19, WFSB Channel 3 meteorologist Scot Haney visited The Friendship School, delighting students from three pre-kindergarten classrooms. Haney met with students in the school library, introducing himself to the youngsters before giving them a brief lesson on weather.

Teachers Jessica Zdanys, Ruth Toledo, and Nancee Terracciano have been studying weather with the students. The children were interested to learn about weather, leading to a unit on the topic. They kept track of daily weather patterns, learned how different types of weather occur, and created their own Weather Station during dramatic play sessions. Zdanys emailed Haney about the unit and he agreed to visit the school.

The students were delighted by Haney’s visit. True to his outgoing and friendly nature, answered dozens of questions from the curious students. He explained what makes rainbows, why snow is white, and where to safely hide during a tornado, among other lessons.

The students gave Haney a large, hand-signed card, and the weatherman was so pleased he presented the card and photos from his visit on-air during Monday’s broadcast.
