LEARN Names Amatrudo Principal of MSMHS
Tara Amatrudo

GROTON -- LEARN is happy to welcome a proven magnet school leader to head the next chapter of excellence for the Marine Science Magnet High School (MSMHS).  Tara Amatrudo will guide the successful MSMHS forward, continuing the focused path to exemplary student outcomes. Presented before the Executive Committee, the Board officers voted unanimously to accept Amatrudo’s appointment on Friday, April 24.

In Amatrudo’s professional career, she served the LEARN and Goodwin University communities as an administrative leader in both Principal and Assistant Principal roles for the Connecticut River Academy (CTRA).  In those roles, she collaborated with LEARN and Goodwin staff to:

  • secure a Magnet Schools Assistance Program grant from the U.S. Department of Education,
  • successfully facilitate CTRA NEASC accreditation in 2018 (as one of the only accredited magnet high schools in the Hartford region),
  • receive a Magnet Schools of America School of Distinction Merit Award in 2019,
  • obtain a Magnet Schools of America School of Excellence Merit Award in 2020, and
  • be recognized as one of the first 50 magnet schools in the country to be named a Certified Magnet School by Magnet Schools of America.

Amatrudo was part of the team who built CTRA from the ground up and most recently supported the design of CTRA’s Advanced Manufacturing Annex. Previously, she developed expertise in the area of Special Education during leadership positions at CTRA and Coginchaug Regional High School.

Amatrudo earned her undergraduate and Master’s degrees from Southern Connecticut State University and her Sixth Year Professional diploma at UConn.  She is trained in racial integration through Harvard Graduate School of Education’s RIDES program, the Reimagining Education Institute at Columbia Teachers College, and the CT Center for School Change’s Equity Institute. She is part of the Killingworth community where she resides with her family.

With seven years of increasing leadership experience in high school settings, Amatrudo said she “believes that it is the responsibility of a magnet school to provide a diverse and challenging educational experience, where everyone comes together to focus on the best outcome for each student.”  She further states, “It is essential that each and every student remain at the center of a school’s vision and goals”. Her training in racial integration gives her the vehicles in which to bring her personal value of equity to the educational environment. Ensuring each individual has what they need to be successful is at the heart of all she does. Equity, achievement, and collaboration are drivers for her work in education.

“Tara’s exemplary accomplishments in the areas of equity, innovation, and student outcomes make her a natural choice to lead MSMHS. She is excited to work with all in the MSMHS community, and I look forward to what she, along with all MSMHS staff, students, families, and partners will accomplish together,” says Kate Ericson, Executive Director of LEARN.

Amatrudo is expected to begin at MSMHS in July.
