Mariana Reyes

LEARN is pleased to announce a member of the LEARN Regional Multicultural Magnet School (RMMS) family as permanent principal of our school located in New London. In recognition of Ms. Reyes’ strong leadership as interim principal during the 2019-2020 school year, she has been appointed permanent principal and will continue to guide RMMS forward. Presented before the Executive Committee, the Board officers voted unanimously to accept Reyes’s appointment on Friday, April 24.

In Reyes’ professional career, she served the LEARN communities originally as a bilingual instructor prior to becoming a New York City Teaching Fellow at P.S. 72/ Lexington Academy in East Harlem.  After returning to LEARN, she developed expertise in the area of special education prior to her move into increasingly broader leadership positions. Reyes was assistant principal at RMMS from 2017 through the spring of 2019, playing an instrumental role in the school’s transition to an International Baccalaureate (IB) school.

“Mariana Reyes is a talented educator who has earned the respect and admiration of the entire RMMS community,” said Kate Ericson, LEARN Executive Director. “We are fortunate to have her as our permanent leader at RMMS. The students will reach their greatest potential with her as their principal.”

Born in Costa Rica, Reyes immigrated to New London at age 3. She earned her undergraduate degree from American University in Washington DC and her Master’s degree from City College of New York, NY. She earned her Sixth Year Professional diploma at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, CT.  She resides in Waterford. Photographer Brenda De Los Santos profiled Reyes last year, as part of her photo and story project “Small City, GREAT Women.” Read the profile here.

In speaking about her vision for the school, Reyes said she “is looking forward to further partnering with the RMMS teachers, staff, and parents to continue to strengthen the spirit of belonging at the school.  Those partnerships enable the students to get what they need from our expert team of educators, setting the foundation for future success.”
