On Monday, Sept. 17, LEARN welcomed six Chinese educators from Dong-Zhan Education Group Ltd. to southeastern Connecticut in an ongoing effort to build international partnerships.

The Shanghai-based Dong-Zhan Education Development Group is a government-sponsored private education organization that owns and operates six school in China’s largest city. The group’s visit follows a 2017 agreement between LEARN and Vermont International Academy (VIA), an international, independent college preparatory program in Burlington, Vt. VIA and LEARN seek to establish opportunities for LEARN magnet high schools to host Chinese student and to provide teacher training for VIA’s Chinese teachers.

Through the visit, LEARN and VIA intended to develop a partnership with the Dong-Zhan organization to further expand the opportunities for student recruitment and teacher education. In addition to formal introductions, the executives and educators from Dong-Zhan visited The Friendship School in Waterford and the Marine Science Magnet High School in Groton.

As a result of the visit, LEARN, VIA, and the Dong-Zhan Group formally signed a memorandum of understanding agreeing to cooperate on student recruitment and exchange programs and provide support for administrators and educators.

“The ongoing effort to explore international partnerships benefits all students in the region and provides opportunities for our educators to expand their horizons,” said Jack Cross, LEARN Director of Innovation and Development.

In 2018, LEARN received approval from the federal government’s Student and Exchange Visitor Information System, which will issue visas allowing international students to attend LEARN schools.
