Poetry in Motion

On Monday, June 11, Regional Multicultural Magnet School celebrated its 13th annual Poetry in Motion with a school-wide assembly.

All students participated, with students in grades 2-5 each writing an original poem. Kindergartners and first graders collaborated with their classmates to write a shared poem; some students even wrote their own individual works. The poems are proudly displayed throughout the halls of RMMS.

At the assembly, the whole school met in the gym to celebrate their creations, which focused on themes of biases and anti-bullying. During this time, some students presented poems that they have been working hard on, and the school also came together and read poems as a whole. Students presented poems in both English and Spanish, displaying their bilingual abilities.

Students and teachers alike also saluted teacher Jo Domin, who has organized Poetry in Motion since its inception.

After the assembly, the teachers were able to incorporate other activities such as poetry readings in class and a scavenger hunt encouraging students to find attributes of poetry (such as alliteration and repetition) in their peers’ poems.  This encouraged continued learning beyond the schoolwide event and a further celebration of poetry throughout the day.
