Regional Multicultural Magnet School Welcomes Andrea Mea as Assistant Principal
Andrea Mea

Andrea Mea begins work immediately as Assistant Principal at LEARN’s Regional Multicultural Magnet School in New London.

When the new school year begins on Wednesday, August 28, Mea will be greeting hundreds of both new and returning students at the oldest interdistrict magnet elementary school in the country. As students and staff settle into the school for the new year, Mea will delve into teaching and instruction at RMMS, which is entering its first year as a fully accredited International Baccalaureate (IB) school.

“I’m really excited to join the RMMS team,” Mea said. “There’s wonderful work being done there, particularly with responsive classroom, and I’m excited to be part of the journey as we embark on the new IB curriculum.”

LEARN, southeastern Connecticut’s regional educational service center, operates RMMS, a fixture in the shoreline community for nearly three decades. Mea will complete the new leadership team for RMMS, joining Mariana Reyes, the school’s new principal.

Mea, of Westerly, R.I., stood out in an impressive field of candidates and was unanimously approved by the LEARN Board of Directors. She is well experienced as a classroom teacher and a certified literacy collaborative coach. Previously, she taught kindergarten from 2009-11, 4th grade from 2011-18, and 5th grade last year. The last district for which she worked, awarded her Teacher of the Year in 2014.  Mea is a proud UConn graduate, earning a bachelor’s degree in psychology. She earned her master’s degree in teaching and her 6th year degree from Sacred Heart University.

“Andrea’s background in literacy will support our staff as we continue to create and deliver rigorous and dynamic units of study as an IB World School,” Reyes said. “She is friendly and approachable and already so committed to our community and our mission. We are looking forward to a tremendous year of growth and learning at RMMS.”
